The making of

TIE Fighter Display

The basic Idea was to make an expandable wall mounted display for TIE fighters so after constructing the ship mounts it was time to make something to get them on a wall.

First a backboard was dimensioned. It is 10"x 36". Then a 2.5" wide catwalk is added for pilots to get to there ships.

Vertical brackets are cut and screwed to the bottom of the catwalk and the backboard to support the ship mounts.

Since the ship are to be lower than the catwalk. Steps are made by end routing 1x and stacking them. They are then glued and brad nailed together. A Forstner bit is used to drill a hole to screw the steps to the underside of the catwalk.

The top step is routed into the Catwalk using the Router Table.

After adding a 5" wide top shelf.  Holes are drilled in the Catwalk and the top shelf for a ladder using a Forstner bit. Since I hadn't come up with a plan for a ladder yet a temporary was used.

Since the hole was so large an extention was needed to get around it.  Wrap around supports were also added to the Catwalk.

The basic rough-out is completed. The lower unit is identical less the top shelf and supports. Spacers were also added between the vertical brackets and the ship mounts extending them out 1.5 inches.
