Hoth Battle Shelf

I start by making the interior componants, then laying them out to figure the length of the bottom board. Since the Main board it to be 48" long it needed to be narrower as to allow the connecting brackets to be mounted at a 45 degree angle. I wanted a zig-zag design for greater visibility
The Bottom Board Demensions are 36"wide x 8"1/2Deep.

The Boards and Brackets ragged edges are first cut with a Bandsaw then Shaped with a Bechtop Beltsander then Sanded smooth with a Palmgrip 4"Sander !!
The Main Board Demensions are 48"wide x 9"Deep. The Brackets are 7"x7"

Since the Hoth Battle Playset it so wide with the pieces side by side, I decided to place them one behind the other elevating the rear piece which also allowes for a Command Center.
The Top Board is 10" wide x 9"Deep.

I'm using a piece of 1/4 Plywood, 48" wide for the back. I set the Shelves on the Plywood and figure the spacing on the top and bottom. I need to allow for the Edge Design and for Wall Mounting Screws !!
The spacing is 3"1/2, Top and Bottom

After trimming the Plywood on the Tablesaw to 21" tall and cutting out the top edge on the Bandsaw. I trace the Shelves as to figure the placement of Screws to mount the Plywood to the Shelves, then Predrill the holes.
NOTE: I also figured the placement of the Wall mounting Screws, tapped them with an Awl, But did "NOT" predrill them as not to get them mixed up with the Back mounting holes. They can be drilled later !!

Now that I know where the Wall mounting Screws will go I can layout and cut the edges of the sides and bottom of the Plywood and do a preassembly before final Sanding and painting.

I prefer to Sand and Paint the pieces Individually, but you have to be Very Careful Sanding as to not "over sand" the places were the Boards join or they won't fit Squarely when you do your final assembly. In this case I mounted the Brackets to the Bottom Board to make them easier to Paint. Then I assembled the Shelves, being careful to make sure the backs all line up even.
NOTE: All the surfaces facing up are Painted in a Gloss as to make them easier to Dust, all the other surfaces are Painted with a Textured Paint.

Next the back is Screwed on. Then The Wall mounting Screw hole are predrilled.

Then (with some help from my wife) It's mounted to the wall and ready for the Interior pieces and Toys.

Here's a Comparison shot with Wampa Shelf.
ENJOY !!
