 The Restoration of...

Park Bench

Restoration Project

My wife picked this park bench out for her mothers day present in 04'.

It was on clearance at a local Hardware and Garden center for half off and looking closely it was evident that in my opinion it had a cheesy finish job (but in my opinion there ALL like that). So after sitting out for three years it was time for a rebuild.

The procedure is simple enough. After taking it apart(and failing to take before pics) I wire wheeled all the metal parts. The back was very rusty. Then Rust-Oleum clean metal primer was sprayed on.

I used a Rust-Oleum American Accents Patina paint kit to finish the metal. Very easy to do just follow the directions. Last all metal parts are given multiple coats of Satin Clear spray Enamel.

The Wood was... well I managed to save the back boards. After running them through the Planer and a good sanding. Minwax Early American stain was foam brushed on and they were good to go.

The seat boards were trash. Only 9/16" thick they were gray, warped and split. I made new ones out of 13/16" Oak and after staining applied 4 coats of Minwax Polyurethane with a foam brush to all the wood parts. After reassembly I sprayed all hardware with Clear Enamel.
