 The making of

When I decided to incorporate control panels into the TIE shelf I wanted to keep the rounded front of the shelf. I could mount them on top but on the end would give them a more pronounced look.

Since that would require a flat surface to attach them to. I would need to make a new shelf. The board is slightly wider to make a five sided arc to mount the panels.

The first panel is centered then the first angle is drawn.

After drawing the second angle the spacing is figured in making sure there is no interference from the vertical post .

Instead of just transferring the marks to the other side I made a pattern on Luan. That just might come in handy on future projects.

Now that the whole pattern is marked out it is cut out on the Bandsaw.

After rough sanding on the Stationary Beltsander to get the final shape a final check is made to make sure the spacing looks right.

Before final sanding. Lines are drawn on since it is hard to distinguish the angles when looking at them straight on.

The presanded Control Panels are attached with decorative washers and screws.

Next the shelf is reattached to the whole TIE Shelf before painting.

Since the vertical support beams are also screwed together using decorative washers having them on the Control Panels gave it a too much look so they were replaced with square drive screws and painted plastic cap covers.

Graphics are added and there ready to direct traffic.

UPDATE: The barren wall behind the Control Pannels was too much to bear so I have added a bank of computers.

Simple but effective. Gives the shelf more depth.
